Major Compost
Major Compost has biodegrading powers, able to break down anything organic - kitchen waste, or an entire forest, given enough time. He could even do this to a human foe, but would never do something so against the rules of war, as he sees them.
During the Vietnam War, the US secretly develops a counterpart to Agent Orange, intended to fully break down organic matter, taking the jungle out of jungle warfare. But it is never safe enough to be used in the field, because the genetically altered enzymes worked a little too well. Major Green, in charge of the project that was given his name, is exposed to the substance, and is changed into something only half human... but still a loyal patriot.
