Duane Ahote runs a small tar sand operation on ancestral land, and production has been extremely high ever since his father agreed to participate in a government experiment of a mysterious formula. Now the Shale Corporation pressures him to sell his land, so that they can expand their operations, but he refuses... Late one night he investigates a strange noise out by the pit, and is attacked, and thrown into the pit. Instead of dying, though, the formula transforms his body, making him a being of tar and sand, alive, but no longer human.
